Background of the Study
Healthcare accessibility is a crucial determinant of health outcomes, particularly in rural and underserved regions. Health infrastructure policies play a key role in ensuring that healthcare facilities, equipment, and medical personnel are adequately distributed to meet population needs (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). In Nigeria, the federal and state governments have implemented various policies to enhance healthcare infrastructure, including the Primary Healthcare Revitalization Program and the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (Federal Ministry of Health, 2024).
Jigawa State, with its predominantly rural population, faces significant challenges in healthcare accessibility due to inadequate health infrastructure, poor road networks, and insufficient healthcare funding (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024). Although policies have been introduced to improve healthcare access, many communities still experience long travel distances to healthcare facilities, lack of essential medical services, and poorly equipped hospitals (Ibrahim & Bello, 2024).
This study seeks to examine the effect of health infrastructure policies on healthcare accessibility in Jigawa State, identifying gaps in implementation and recommending strategies for improving healthcare reach.
Statement of the Problem
Despite health infrastructure policies aimed at improving healthcare access, many residents of Jigawa State still struggle to obtain timely and adequate medical care. The distribution of healthcare facilities remains uneven, with rural areas experiencing severe shortages of hospitals, clinics, and essential medical services (Bello & Yusuf, 2023). Additionally, poor maintenance of healthcare infrastructure and inadequate funding have hindered policy effectiveness (Ogunbanjo & Salami, 2024).
While previous studies have examined healthcare accessibility in Nigeria, there is limited research specifically evaluating the impact of health infrastructure policies in Jigawa State. This study seeks to fill this gap by assessing how these policies influence healthcare accessibility and identifying areas for improvement.
